Wie wird die Seele heil? Bedingungen für die psychische Gesundheit von Frauen [in German]

Gewalterfahrung, Arbeitslosigkeit und Armut, Behinderung, Migration, Psychiatrieerfahrung und sexuelle Übergriffe sind im Leben von Frauen relativ wahrscheinliche Ereignisse, deren Folgen häufig als krankheitswertige Störungen eingeordnet werden.
Frauen und Männer unterscheiden sich hinsichtlich ihrer gesellschaftlichen Stellung immer noch sehr stark. Unterschiede in ihrer sozialen Lage, in den verschiedenen Lebensphasen und in ihrer Erfahrung von Gewalt wirken sich auf die Chancen und Hindernisse für ein gesundes Leben aus.
Ausgehend von dieser Situation stellen wir für den Kongress folgende Leitfragen:
Welche Ressourcen ermöglichen Frauen eine gute Bewältigung schwieriger Lebenssituationen?
Welche Rolle spielen dabei Sinnfragen, Spiritualität, die Möglichkeit, Stressoren zu verstehen, ihnen Bedeutung zu verleihen, sie zu handhaben?
Welche Bedingungen braucht es, um den Focus von der Störung hin zu Lebensqualitäten, zu unversehrten Anteilen zu lenken?
Was heißt das für die (therapeutische, heilende, pflegende) Arbeit mit Frauen?
Was heißt Salutogenese bezüglich einer frauengerechten Gesundheitsversorgung, einer frauengemäßen Politik?

The ESTSS-European Workshops on Traumatic Stress 2005
A practical approach introducing and deepening the trauma field

These Workshops will offer the participants a variety of workshops on trauma knowledge. It will be interesting for the ones who want to get to know more about it, but have not taken any step yet and for the ones who already have trauma knowledge and want to expand it. Well known experts from all over Europe such as Kerstin Bergh Johannesson and Jonathan Bisson will share their expertise interactively, which has never been offered before in the Netherlands. An absolute must for people active in the trauma field. The Dutch Psychiatric Association (NVvP) has accredited these workshops with 10 points.

Childhood and Trauma VI: Experience of Bonding and Forming Values

We invite you to follow the traces of remembering and knowing, of talking and narrating and of singing and portraying, the traces that lead back to the beginning. To realize what we are based on.
We follow the impacts of early childhood experiences, the development of a human being from a disordered form of existence into the structured emotional, cognitive and social aspects of life, aspects that are physically established.
We set the focus on the impacts of early childhood and the experiences of this time period, on the devel-opment of meaningful and lively things, and the forming of values and religious feelings. We extend our knowledge in the areas between flexibility and rigidity, agility and dogmation, and stability and sadness.
Also, we enquire the memories of conscious people, follow their biographies through the forming of values in living relationships, in dignity and care through meaningful and absurd events, in times of physical and emotional damage and disregard and through turning to and away from ethical and religious living and think-ing.
In a common act we try to identify social and political ways of behaving that give us the possibility to find answers. The answers to the harsh reality of the global society that urgently requires them to keep up our societies and every person's ethical self-image and to give every human being, especially the children, the possibility to live their life in dignity. We are looking for answers to the tragedies and cruelties that cur-rently persist to our consciousness and subconsciousness.
And we ask 'Why?' We understand this symposium to be a statement, an act of positioning, as an inner reflection, inside one's self, intime, to make actions possible- actions in the social and political field, actions fruitfully based on knowledge, cognition and experience.

Preview on Childhood and Trauma 2006: Children at risk - a holistic approach
Following an invitation by Welt der Kinder a research group of active international experts works in agreement with the UN convention on childrens rights, on global strategies of intervention on child suffering from 2005 to 2007. Together with this research group we define the topics of the 2006 symposium. Among others the main emphasis is going to be set on positive projects for children all over the world that are already established in practice.

We are excited to invite you to the ISTSS 21st Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada. The theme of our 21st meeting will be "Dissemination: Transforming Lives Through Transforming Care." This will prove to be an important meeting, as the focus on dissemination is one with broad implications for our field.
In the past decade, in particular, we have learned a great deal about recovery following traumatic events and the helpfulness of interventions for those with persistent trauma-related disorders such as PTSD. However, as professionals working with trauma survivors on a daily basis, and as those who are personally recovering from the effects of trauma, many of us are keenly aware of some basic, but unfortunate, facts regarding care for trauma survivors.
Many trauma survivors, despite suffering considerable trauma-related difficulties, do not seek care for years following the trauma. Still others, when they ultimately seek help, find that there are few available resources in their communities. And finally, for others, when they find available help, they do not get access to state-of-the-art care.
The focus on dissemination suggests that we at ISTSS work to "spread widely" the knowledge we have gained through years of systematic research and accumulated experience. This focus is intentionally broad. Dissemination, for example, includes translational research, bridging the gap between basic research and clinical practice. Dissemination also includes research that builds on efficacy questions such as, "Does it work?" to begin to address effectiveness questions such as, "What works for whom and under what circumstances?"
In addition, dissemination addresses questions with broad public health implications such as, "How and when do we utilize early interventions to help prevent chronic problems in both military and civilian populations?" Finally, dissemination includes systematic study of dissemination methods themselves. How do we facilitate trauma survivors seeking help, if needed, after traumatic events? What sorts of interventions are preferred? How do we best enhance access to services in remote locations where helping professionals are rare? And, very important, how do we best train providers of mental health services (professionals, lay people, graduate students) to provide quality state-of-the-art care?
As we consider how to effectively transform lives and care systems through dissemination, we also must think ultimately about broader levels of intervention, focusing not only on individuals, but also on families, cultural groups, communities and nations. We look forward to seeing you in Toronto and hope that the 21st annual meeting will be an experience in which you will learn greatly from colleagues and share your own knowledge to help ISTSS transform lives through transforming care.

The Future of Memory: An International Holocaust and Trauma Studies Conference

During the 1980s and 1990s, Holocaust and trauma studies emerged at the forefront of interdisciplinary academic debate as scholars sought to articulate and analyse the diverse inscriptions of traumatic memory in cultural, social, psychic and political life. As a distinctly dynamic project, the study of the Holocaust and trauma more generally has established critical agendas that focus on the ethical parameters of representing horrific events; the modes of transmission and lived experience of traumatic history; the centrality of secondary, proxy or vicarious witnessing; the generic diversity of survivor testimony; the material cultures and landscapes of memory; the creative disorders of memory; the dialectical relationship of remembering and forgetting; the affective realms of memory and the politics of melancholy and mourning. In the light of these diverse debates, the aim of this conference is to reflect critically upon the memorial legacies and possible memorial futures of Holocaust and traumatic experience.
The organizers are keen for the conference to address the ways in which the traumatic memories of the 20th and 21st centuries and their interdisciplinary conceptualisation will change and exist beyond their/this time.
Key questions might include:
Which experiences and events can be remembered and which will be forgotten?
What kinds of memory might be transmitted in the future?
What form will memory take in the near and distant future?
Can memory ever secure a future for the past?
The organisers invite 300-word abstracts on topics broadly related to the above questions from the fields of Architecture, Comparative and Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, European Studies, Film and Media Studies, Geography, History, Philosophy, Politics, Sociology, Visual Arts, Women's and Gender Studies.
Submission deadline for abstracts: 1st March 2005.

Wer sich schämt, will im Boden versinken, sich den Blicken der anderen entziehen. Scham ist eine versteckte Emotion, die so schwer erträglich ist, dass sie häufig abgewehrt wird: Um sich nicht selbst schämen zu müssen, werden andere beschämt, verhöhnt, verachtet, wie Dreck behandelt, ausgeschlossen oder vernichtet. Frühe, sog. "Scham-Kulturen" bedienen sich vorwiegend der Scham zur Regulierung ihrer zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen. Nach diesem Muster funktionierte auch die Diskriminierung und Verfolgung von jüdischen und nicht konformen Bürgern im Nationalsozialismus: Sie wurden öffentlich gedemütigt, aus der "Volksgemeinschaft" ausgestoßen und vernichtet. Scham ist ein sozialer Affekt, der in allen zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen akut werden kann.
Daher ist es für alle, die mit Menschen arbeiten, wichtig, Scham und Schamabwehr zu erkennen, um damit umgehen zu können. Etwa in Psychotherapie und psychologischer Beratung, wenn Klienten ihre Gefühle als "Schwäche" erleben und abwehren müssen. In Medizin und Altenarbeit, wenn kranke oder alte Menschen sich ihrer Abhängigkeit oder des Kontrollverlusts von Körperfunktionen schämen und dies verleugnen.
In Sozialarbeit und Sozialpädagogik, wenn Arbeitslosigkeit oder Armut als Makel erlebt werden. Oder in der Pädagogik, wo es nicht darum geht, Schüler für ihre Fehler zu beschämen, sondern das Lernpotenzial von Fehlern zu erkennen und zu nutzen. Lehrer selbst sind heute, wie kaum eine andere Berufsgruppe, öffentlichen Beschämungen ausgesetzt ("faule Säcke").
Die verschiedenen Beiträge und die zum Teil geschlossenen, berufsbezogenen Arbeitsgruppen untersuchen Scham und ihre Abwehrformen, ihre geschichtlichen und aktuellen Auswirkungen und ihre Bedeutung für psychosoziale und pädagogische Arbeitsfelder. Möglichkeiten des konstruktiven Umgangs mit Scham und Wege zu einer Kultur der Anerkennung werden erarbeitet.
Die Tagung richtet sich an alle Interessierten, besonders an die in den genannten Berufsfeldern Tätigen sowie an Studierende. Sie ist als zertifizierte Fortbildungsveranstaltung für Ärzte und Psychologen anerkannt.

Trauma und Schmerz II. Psychoanalytische, philosophische und sozialwissenschaftliche Perspektiven [in German]

Das Trauma ist nicht nur in der Psychoanalyse und Psychosomatik, sondern auch in den Kulturwissenschaften in den letzten Jahren ein zentraler Gegenstand klinischer Arbeit und wissenschaftlicher Auseinandersetzung. Gerade im Krankheitskonzept Trauma wird dessen kulturelle Mitbedingtheit zum auffälligen Problem. Grund genug, sich auf psychoanalytischer Grundlage aus einer interdisziplinären Perspektive mit dem Trauma zu beschäftigen, wie dies bereits in den Jahren 2003 und 2004 jeweils mit einer kleinen Arbeitstagung geschehen ist. In diesem Jahr ist eine Fortführung der letztjährigen Akzentuierung auf das Problem von Trauma und Schmerz hin geplant. Zwar zählt der Schmerz zentral zur Symptomatik des Traumas. Umso mehr verwundert es, dass er als Phänomen bisher kaum eine eigenständige Reflektion erfahren hat. Dabei ist der Schmerz gerade wie dies für das Trauma ebenfalls gilt, ein Phänomen, welches an der psychosomatischen Grenze und deren Überschreitung situiert ist. In seiner Referenzlosigkeit artikuliert der Schmerz den Riss, der im Menschen herrscht.
Die öffentliche Veranstaltung richtet sich spezifisch an jene, die sich bereits in ihrer praktischen oder theoretischen Arbeit mit dem Phänomen Trauma beschäftigen. Der intime Charakter der Veranstaltung soll den interdisziplinären, möglichst offenen Austausch zwischen Referenten und Teilnehmern befördern. Neben Vorträgen ist eine gemeinsame Fallarbeit geplant, bei der ein psychotherapeutisches Gespräch mit einem Trauma-Patienten, der an einer Schmerzsymptomatik leidet, interdisziplinär aus philosophischer, psychoanalytischer und kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive verstanden werden soll.

4th International Psychological Trauma Symposium
Man made psychological traumas and forced migrations

Man made traumas have been observed at a large spectrum from individual traumatisation to traumatisation of communities and societies and have a deep negative impact on personal and social well-being. Mental health and other specialists who are dealing with psychosocial traumas face a large public health problem and they are in need of more knowledge. In this 4th Psychological Trauma Symposium experience and knowledge are shared in a multidisciplinary fashion.
Target groups are psychiatrists, psychologists, general practitioners and the other medical doctors, social workers, public health specialists, sociologists and human rights' activists.

Bosnien 92-95. Der Krieg und seine Folgen [in German]

Am 11. Juli 2005 jährte sich zum zehnten mal das Massaker in der Podrinje-Region im Nordosten Bosniens; am 14. Dezember jährt sich, ebenso zum zehnten mal, die Unterzeichnung des Dayton Agreements in Paris. In Bosnien ist der Krieg weiterhin ein öffentliches Thema; oft werden die Gerichtsverhandlungen im Den Haager Kriegsverbrechertribunal live im bosnischen Fernsehen übertragen. Und: nicht zuletzt hat auch in Bosnien-Herzegowina das inzwischen weltweit ausgestrahlte Video, das die Hinrichtungen von sechs Bosniaken in Trnovo, einem Dorf, etwa 100km vor Sarajevo, zeigt, Bestürzen ausgelöst. In Deutschland aber, wie überhaupt im Ausland, ist der Krieg samt seiner Folgen in den Hintergrund gerückt und aus den Schlagzeilen verschwunden, sieht man von den aktuellen Entwicklungen bei der Fahndung nach den Hauptkriegsverbrechern ab, die auch die internationale Öffentlichkeit bewegen.
Viele Fragen aber bleiben:
Wie kann es gelingen, daß Bosnien-Herzegowina aus seiner politischen Selbstblockade der Nachkriegszeit zu einem stabilen (und stabilisierenden) Faktor auf der Landkarte werden kann?
Wie gehen diejenigen, die der Krieg getroffen hat, mit den ökonomischen, den sozialen, den psychischen und den physischen Folgen um?
Wie funktioniert die Aufklärung des Verbleibs von über 17.000 Vermißten, wie geht die Identifizierung der gefundenen Leichenteile vonstatten?
Welches Engagement legt der bosnische Staat an den Tag, um die Invaliden wieder in Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft zu integrieren?
Welche psychischen und sozialen Probleme haben die ehemaligen Soldaten, die Veteranen?
Was bewegt die Hinterbliebenen der ÇMänner von Srebrenicaí dazu, zurückzukehren an den Ort des Massakers?
Wie Çsehení Kriegsblinde ihre soziale Situation im Nachkriegsbosnien? Wie reagiert die Öffentlichkeit auf sie, welche speziellen Bedürfnisse haben sie – und welche werden erfüllt?

Testimony and Witness: from the Local to the Transnational

This conference solicits new work in the field of testimony studies that reflects trans-national and cross-cultural concerns relating to the production, reception and performance of personal and collective testimonies arising from historically specific injustice throughout the 20th century. We are interested in testimonies produced in the context of, for example, World War I and II, the USSR, the Holocaust and forced migrations, genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, and Bosnia, war rape, and resulting projects of prosecution (eg. International Criminal Tribunals) and national confrontation (eg. South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the Bringing Them Home Inquiry in Australia), and in the sites (eg. legal, digital, artistic, textual) of testimony production.
The explosion of life-writing which bears witness to these events of historical injustice and wartime persecution is multi-sited and trans-national, as evidenced in the proliferation of Latin American testimonios and narratives of human rights violations in Asia, Australia and Africa. This life-writing takes many forms and has emerged, to some extent, in the shadow of the Holocaust as the 20th century paradigm of genocide. Acknowledging the accrued sites of production and their multi-disciplinary interpretation as the foundation of what can be called ëtestimony studiesí, this conference seeks to address issues that surround the production, analysis and reception of ëtraumatic witnessí. The conference aims to bring together scholars who are developing new frameworks for analysing life-writing that can be described as ëtestimonialí in the broadest sense, for example in both literary and non-literary forms, including visual art, embodied witnessing, digital archives, and oral histories. The conference organisers hope to create an environment that will provide the opportunity for participants to engage in a cross-cultural and trans-national dialogue.
The conveners seek papers that attend to the local conditions of the production and reception of testimony, as well as papers that explore the wider national and trans-national circuits of their distribution and consumption. Papers may either address theoretical and methodological issues, or offer a cultural, historical or political analysis of testimonies.
Call for Proposals
We seek 250 word proposals for 25-minute papers that address the following issues. Papers on other topics will also be considered.
What social, political, historical and material conditions have given rise to new forms of life-writing and testimony production? How does narrative dissonance in the production of video-testimony, for example, complicate the idea of 'authorship' and subjectivity?
What challenges does testimony pose to historical interpretation of traumatic events?
What role do factors such as gender, race and ethnicity play in the production and reception of testimony, and in the shaping of cultural memory?
What strategies do new forms of testimony and life-writing use to negotiate issues of power, subjectivity and address?
What are the ethical demands posed by listening, writing, and reading testimonies as ëtextí?
How do various methodological approaches result in different ëreadingsí of testimony as text?
To what extent do testimonies ëundoí national histories and myths? To what extent do they create new myths?
Does the framing of testimony invite or encourage some kinds of readings at the expense of other kinds of readings?
What role does aesthetic or textual form play in shaping how audiences respond to testimonies of trauma?
In addition to panels on specific topics, we anticipate organising a roundtable on approaches to reading testimonies. We invite proposals for 8-10 page papers that demonstrate, through a textual analysis of a testimony, a particular methodological approach.

zur 8. Jahrestagung der Deutschsprachigen Gesellschaft für Psychotraumatologie im schönen Monat Mai möchten wir Sie ganz herzlich nach Hannover einladen. Die Abteilung Psychosomatik und Psychotherapie der MHH freut sich, diesen Kongress zusammen mit der DeGPT zu organisieren. Das Feld der Psychotraumatologie beründet sich in einer rasanten Entwicklung. Bei der Gestaltung des Tagungsprogramms haben wir die Fragen berücksichtigt, was hat Bestand und wohin geht die Entwicklung.
Für die Plenarvorträge ist es uns gelungen, prominente Vertreter aus dem Inland und auch international anerkannte Experten (Herrn Ellert Nijenhuis aus den Niederlanden und Herrn Bessel van der Kolk, USA) zu gewinnen. Zusammen mit den Symposien, die der Vertiefung von Einzelthemen dienen, versprechen wir uns einen interessanten Kongress, der sicher vielfältige Anregung für Ihre und unsere praktische Arbeit mit traumatisierten Menschen bietet.

In den letzten Jahren hat sich ein intensiver Diskurs um ein besseres Verständnis und daraus abgeleitet neue konzeptuelle theoretische und praktische Zugänge zu traumatischem Erleben, sowie eine Neubewertung des Traumabegriffes an sich entwickelt. Aus analytischer Perspektive haben sich die in diesem Diskurs aufgeworfenen Fragen dahin gehend verdichtet, ob Übertragungsarbeit bei traumatisierten Patienten ev. sogar schädlich sein kann.
Vor allem neuere Erkenntnisse aus der Neurobiologie zu Themen wie z. B. Gerhirnplastizität, Gedächtnissysteme (episodisches Gedächtnis, prozedurales Gedächtnis, Traumagedächtnis) und Stressverarbeitungssysteme (Panik- und Furchtsystem, kontrollierte und unkontrollierte Stressreaktione) helfen uns, ein zunehmend differenzierteres Bild psychotraumatologisch relevanter Prozesse zu entwickeln. In letzter Konsequenz führen diese sogar zu sehr allgemeinen Fragestellungen, wie jener nach der generellen Beschaffenheit von Bewusstsein und der Existenz eines freien Willens – Themen also, die unser Selbstverständnis und Weltbild existenziell berühren.
Auf diesem Hintergrund sollen im Rahmen des 6. Wiener Symposiums "Psychoanalyse und Körper" zwei Ziele verfolgt werden:
1. Darstellung des "State of Art" einschließlich der Reflexion bisher erarbeiteter Theorien, Metatheorien und praktischer Zugänge – dies in erster Linie aus der Sicht tiefenpsychologisch/psychoanalytischer und körperorientierter Therapiemodelle
2. Reflexion der Frage, welche Konzepte und Theorien als störungsspezifisch anzusehen sind, und welche darüber hinaus gehen (z. B. im Sinne eines neuen, an die Erkenntnisse der modernen Neurobiologie angepassten Neurosenverständnisses)
Aus methodischer Perspektive stellen sich dabei u. a. folgende Fragen: Wo noch außerhalb eines traumaspezifischen Kontextes ist z. B. eine "Arbeit auf der inneren Bühne", die "Arbeit mit hilfreichen inneren Wesen", die "EMDR-Technik" oder sind "Zentrierungsübungen" sinnvoll? Und: Welches Verständnis von therapeutischer Beziehung ist mit solchen methodischen Zugängen vereinbar bzw. nicht vereinbar? Ebenso: Welchen Stellenwert kann "Körperarbeit" aus einem solchen Blickwinkel haben?
Aus einem Bekenntnis zum Methodenpluralismus heraus will das 6. Wiener Symposium "Psychoanalyse und Körper" den genannten Diskurs fördern und vertiefen.

Simone Gigliotti, "Unspeakable Pasts as Limit Events: The Holocaust, Genocide and the Stolen Generations". In: Australian Journal of Politics and History, 49, 2003, No. 2, pp. 164-181.
This article examines the role of testimony in the production of the memory of the Holocaust and the practice of forcible removals in Australia as "limit events". A "limit event" is an event or practice of such magnitude and profound violence that its effects rupture the otherwise normative foundations of legitimacy and so-called civilising tendencies that underlie the constitution of political and moral community. The references are the stories of removal collated in Bringing Them Home, and eyewitness testimonies from the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem in 1961. By situating the stolen generations and the Eichmann trial as limit events, I argue that the effects of witnessing and story-telling exposed a cultural semantics of what was speakable and unspeakable in the narratives of judging historical injustice and remembering past traumas.
