Klaus-Dieter Grothe, Wetzlar The truth of the victims

Under this title I have developed an internet page (URL: http://www.grothe.org/bosnien), listing evidence of genocide on the Bosnian Muslim population between 1992 and 1995.

The motivation for this project arose from examination of witness testimonies, particularly from Dori Laub. I began first with video testimonies, analogous to Dori Laub, but unfortunately I lacked the technical and material requirements to subtitle the videos with a German translation or to make it otherwise accessible to a broad public. After discussions with my son, who now maintains this internet site technically, I therefore decided to publish at least the transcript of the videos on the internet in order to make the material available to the general public.

The victims described to date are all undergoing therapy with me for post-traumatic problems. They all agreed to participate in this project, although many requested that their testimonials remain anonymous because of their overwhelming fear of their former tormentors, who today still reside in the corridors of power. It was difficult for all involved to report about their experiences, but in the majority of cases the victims subsequently felt relieved to have done so.

The pages also include text from a presentation given in January 2000 at the Gesamthochschule Kassel, Germany, during a symposium in honour of Hans Keilson ("Als das Wünschen noch geholfen hat...."; abstract see below).

I invite all people working with Bosnian refugees to become involved in this project. View the internet site and ask your patients if they would also consider publishing their own testimonials and truth. Besides the individual therapeutic aspect, the site also has a socio-political aspect: In my opinion the general public is still too poorly informed about the truth of the war and events in Bosnia, hence a risk exists that Bosnia will be overlooked. Both politicians and the public have looked on as genocide was committed and are reluctant to be confronted with their guilt. If you agree with these aims, please assist to develop this archive of testimonies. Responses or criticism, revisions and improvements are of course welcome at any time.

Abstract: "Als das Wünschen noch geholfen hat..." ("When wishing still helped...")
The practical psychiatric-psychotherapeutic treatment and care of Bosnian victims are described, along with knowledge and experience the therapist has developed from confrontation with disease manifestations never before seen in his practise or training. The description centres on the personal testimony of a victim whose case serves as a prime example for the specific problems of traumatised Bosnian refugees, also in the third traumatic sequence (after Keilson).
