Memory has a paradoxical place in postmodern culture - on the one hand, we seem to suffer from "loss of memory", while on the other hand, there has never been so much talk of loss of memory and never before have so many archives and historical museums been built. The complementary nature of these two tendencies is obvious. The traditionally positivist form of transferal seems to have gone out of style, resulting in success for the new historiography, which has borrowed from the fictional strategies of the novel and the cinema. Cyberspace, in the meantime, is transforming the past into an archive of recyclable images which can be re-arranged at will.
In Brazil, where society seems to suffer from permanent amnesia, history is perceived merely as a soap opera. Brazil’s 500th anniversary celebrations have shown that Brazilians’ relationship to the past is more often expressed in spectacles and celebrations than in a critical review. But resistance against the main stream trend to marketing the past is growing. Some groups in Brazilian society have begun relating historiographical records and subjective memory to one another. By doing so, they have stripped historical documents of the conservative tenor which appeared to be the unquestionable result of their "objectivist" form. Thus, the facts are being re-politicized and naive-academic neutrality is being destroyed.
The catastrophes, genocides, and wars of the twentieth century have thoroughly destroyed belief in progress, humanism, and enlightenment, and made a positive, affirmative remembrance of the past as a series of interchangeable images impossible. What was needed was a new form of relating to the past. Any critical relationship to the past is conscious of both the limits of any representation of the past and of the difficulties of finding voices with which to express traumata. Daniel Libeskind’s "ethical architecture" is one of the most eloquent examples of this new form of confronting the past both openly and critically. In the past three decades, a number of important artists have devoted themselves to this "art of memory," among them, to name a few, Anselm Kiefer, Esther Shalev-Gerz and Jochen Gerz, Christian Boltanski, and Cindy Sherman. The question of memory is essential to all these artists’ works, although in very different ways.
The intention of the colloquium is to analyze these new critical forms of relations to the past, focusing on works which intervene in so-called public space.
Speakers from six countries have been invited: Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, USA, and Israel. These are countries in which the recent past has been marked by the disappearance of people, by collaborationism, Nazism, or war.
The three day colloquium will deal with the following three groups of themes:

2. Monument - anti-monument: the art of memory
3. History and memory in post-totalitarian times

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Evangelischen Akademie Bad Boll und dem Arbeitskreis Asyl Baden-Wuerttemberg
- Fluechtlingsschutz und Zuwanderung duerfen keine Gegensaetze sein. Da die deutsche Wirtschaft dringend auslaendische Beschaeftigte, und damit Zuwanderung braucht, werden sich die politischen Parteien auf eine gemeinsame Loesung einigen muessen. Aber was geschieht mit den Fluechtlingen? Gesetzliche Luecken und eine restriktive Asylpolitik bringen Schutzbeduerftige weiterhin in verzweifelte Situationen. Dies gilt auch fuer die Gruppen, die sich fuer Recht und Menschenwuerde einsetzen. Sie fordern eine vertiefte Debatte ueber das Asylrecht mit der deutlichen Aufforderung, dass die Pflicht zum Schutz von Fluechtlingen nicht aus den Augen verloren werden darf.
Wir erwarten Karl Ludwig Kohlwage, Bischof a. D., Mitglied der Zuwanderungskommission der Bundesregierung, Luebeck, Hermann Uihlein, Deutscher Caritasverband, Freiburg und Wolfgang Weber, Kirchenrat, Stuttgart, sowie namhafte Vertreter der Bundesparteien, der Polizei und der Wirtschaft. Die Tagung, die zugleich Jahrestagung des Arbeitskreises Asyl Baden-Wuerttemberg e. Fremdes Begehren. Repraesentationsformen transkultureller Beziehungen

- Wenn wir ueber Ariadne hoeren, dass sie Theseus heimlich den Weg aus der labyrinthischen Gefangenschaft weist und dann selbst in der Fremde zurueckgelassen wird, welche Geschichte wird uns da erzaehlt? Handelt diese Geschichte von Liebe, von Verrat, vom Heldentum des Griechen, vom Leid der Kreterin oder vom Goetterwillen? Welche Hoffnungen offenbart sie, welche Aengste verbirgt sie? Und wie erging es Ruth, die laut hebraeischer Bibel nach dem Tod ihres Mannes der Schwiegermutter ins Land Juda folgte und dort als Magd um Boas warb? Was bedeutet es fuer die juedische Ueberlieferung, dass die fremde Moabiterin schliesslich Stammutter Koenig Davids wurde? Bereits die antiken Mythen und die biblischen Erzaehlungen versuchen auf vielen Ebenen das Begehren des Fremden, das Fremde des Begehrens zu benennen wie zu bannen.
Laut Robert Young ist auch der kolonialen Herrschaft seit jeher ein Begehren eingeschrieben, das von einer verdeckten aber unstillbaren Sehnsucht nach Transgression und Hybriditaet spricht. Die zahlreichen erotisiert dargestellten Begegnungen zwischen Kolonisatoren und Kolonisierten individualisieren und domestizieren diese gefaehrliche Sehnsucht, zeugen jedoch ebenso von den hierarchischen Zuschreibungen, die die transkulturellen Kontakte praegen und bestimmen. Selbst jenseits von eindeutigen gesellschaftlichen Hierarchien - etwa im vielschichtigen Geflecht multiethnischer Gesellschaften oder in Konfliktsituationen zwischen einzelnen Laendern Europas - dient die Darstellung von erotischen Verhaeltnissen zwischen Angehoerigen unterschiedlicher Kulturen, Nationen oder Ethnien haeufig als Vehikel fuer eine grundsaetzliche Ausdifferenzierung von geschlechtsspezifischen, "rassischen", kulturellen, religioesen und/oder nationalen Identitaetskonzeptionen. Dabei koennen koerperlich-intime Begegnungen gerade auch fuer Angehoerige einer gesellschaftlichen Minoritaet zum ambivalent erlebten Ort einer Auseinandersetzung mit der Majoritaetskultur werden.
Im abendlaendischen Denken wird die Frau immer wieder als "andere Nation" (Goethe) oder "dunkler Kontinent" (Freud) assoziiert. Bereits ein solcher Sprachgebrauch laesst vermuten, dass sich in transnationalen Beziehungen tradierte Geschlechterstereotypen durchkreuzen, verdoppeln, ueberlagern oder aufheben. Die Geschlechterstereotypen geraten um so mehr ins Wanken, als Frauen ihrerseits nicht mehr nur Objekte, sondern ebenso Akteure des Repraesentationsprozesses sind.
Die Tagung Fremdes Begehren widmet sich kuenstlerischen Repraesentationsformen von transkulturellen Beziehungen, die in unterschiedlichen historischen Kontexten entstanden und in unterschiedlichen Medien wie beispielsweise Literatur, Film oder Malerei ausgedrueckt sind. Dabei lotet die Tagung zwei polare, haeufig jedoch interferierende Aspekte aus: die Beherrschungsstrategien, mittels derer das begehrte Fremde stillgelegt wird, ebenso wie Liebespraktiken, die ein Spiel mit hybriden Identitaeten erlauben bzw. - in den Worten von Julia Kristeva - eine Konfrontation mit dem Fremden in uns selbst ermoeglichen. Insgesamt sollen auch massgebliche Diskurse (z.B. juristische, religioese, medizinische oder ethnologische), die die erotischen Beziehungen kommentieren oder reglementieren, ins Blickfeld ruecken. Somit bietet die Tagung die Basis fuer einen interdisziplinaeren Austausch ueber ein Phaenomen, welches seit Jahrtausenden eine enorme sozialgeschichtliche Bedeutung und Sprengkraft hat, und heute - angesichts von Migrationsbewegungen und Globalisierungstendenzen, aber auch von "ethnischen Saeuberungen", von Fremdenfeindlichkeit und Rassismus - neue Relevanz erhaelt.
Wir bitten interessierte ReferentInnen darum, einen Vortragstitel und ein kurzes Exposé (ca. 15 Zeilen) bis Mitte September an die u.g. Adresse zu schicken bzw. zu mailen. Die Tagungsbeitraege werden in einem Sammelband publiziert; die publikationsfertigen Manuskripte muessten Ende Maerz 2002 vorliegen.

Zehn Jahre deutsche Vereinigung - Geschichtspolitische Brueche und Kontinuitaeten [in German]

- Der Arbeitskreis "Geschichte und Politik" in der Deutschen Vereinigung fuer Politische Wissenschaft (DVPW) wird sich am 25.1. und 26.1.2002 im Senatssaal der Europa-Universitaet Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder zu seiner halbjaehrlichen Tagung mit dem oben genannten Thema treffen.
Mit ihrer Erzaehlung "Was bleibt" loeste Christa Wolf eine der ersten geschichtspolitischen Debat-ten im Kontext der Wende 1989/90 aus. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde die These formuliert, die Westdeutschen haetten die Ostdeutschen bereits im Sommer 1990 geschichtspolitisch mundtot gemacht. Jetzt, im Rueckblick auf die Diskurse zum 10. Jahrestag der Vereinigung, stellt sich die Frage, wie nicht nur Umbruch und Zusammenwachsen in Deutschland, sondern Geschichte generell diskutiert wird und inwieweit die Vereinigung als Zaesur in der geschichts- und vergangenheitspolitischen Auseinandersetzung gelten kann.
Auf seiner Tagung wird der AK die geschichtspolitischen Brueche und Kontinuitaeten im ersten Jahrzehnt der deutschen Vereinigung hinterfragen. Die Vortraege sollen die Themen, Strukturen und Muster, Akteure und Deutungsherrschaften der geschichtspolitischen Auseinandersetzungen der vergangenen Jahre beleuchten. Die Tagung moechte zudem in vergleichender Perspektive den Zusammenhang von Geschichte und Identitaet nach historischen Wenden reflektieren.
Auch dieses Mal stellt sich der Arbeitskreis der Breite des Themas. So besteht keinerlei Einschraen-kung in bezug auf bestimmte Akteure, Zielgruppen, politische Strategien etc. Vielmehr wuerden wir uns ueber Beitraege freuen, in denen Veraenderungen im Geschichtsdiskurs der deutschen Gesellschaft untersucht werden.

Ein Themenabend von ARTE und WDR
Gezeichnet fuers Leben. Kindesmissbrauch und die Folgen [in German]
Ausstrahlung auf ARTE: Donnerstag, 6. September 2001, ab 20.45 Uhr
- Allein in Deutschland wurden im vergangenen Jahr nahezu 20.000 Faelle von Kindesmissbrauch angezeigt. Die Dunkelziffer liegt deutlich hoeher. Ein Umstand, der fassungslos macht, erschuettert und Emotionen schuert. Eine sensible Betrachtung des Themas, die vor allem den oft lebenslangen Leiden der Opfer gerecht wuerde, scheint jedoch fast unmoeglich. Bis heute bestimmen die reisserischen Schlagzeilen der Presse und die hitzigen Parolen der Stammtische die oeffentliche Diskussion.
ARTE unternimmt den Versuch, sich dem Thema "Kindesmissbrauch" jenseits der Schlagzeilen und Parolen zu naehern. Die Filme des Themenabends werden dabei ergaenzt durch ein Internet- und Telefonforum mit Spezialisten, die Zuschauerfragen live beantworten.

Fellowship Opportunities 2002 - 2003
- The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies announces its fellowship opportunities for 2002-2003. The Center awards fellowships to support research and writing on the Holocaust and in genocide studies. Awards are granted on a competitive basis to Ph.D. candidates, postdoctoral researchers, senior scholars, and professionals holding degrees from accredited academic and research institutions worldwide. The Center welcomes approaches by scholars in history, political science, literature, philosophy, religion, sociology, anthropology, psychology and other disciplines.
Visiting scholars spend anywhere from one month to an academic year in residence at the Museum. During this time, fellows have access to more than 13 million pages of Holocaust-related documentation from archives across Europe. Scholars may also utilize the Museum's library; oral history collection; music, film, and photo archives; as well as the vast resources available at other repositories in the Washington, D.C. area.
The postmark deadline for all fellowship applications is November 1, 2001.
Decisions will be announced by February 8, 2002. Fellowships may begin as early as April 2002, and must be completed no later than September 2003.
All applications must be in English and consist of:
- A completed application form
- A project proposal not to exceed five single-spaced pages (see application form for guidelines)
- A curriculum vita
- Three letters of recommendation that speak to the applicant's ability to carry out the proposed project (see guidelines on the application form)

The recurrence of historical memory - as a factor, both positive and negative, in development choices - raised for me a number of questions about how various expressions of remembrance might be brought into dialogue. Working with scholarly networks created to document these expressions of remembrance (including colleagues at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum), we did notice a common core of concerns.
The exploration and definition of these core concerns is the task of The Legacy Project. We are working on a number of "real" projects - exhibitions, publications, exchanges - but the wealth of material that our scholars have gathered is being made available through the website. At launch, the site contains a considerable number of materials, but we will be adding much more on a regular basis to our existing sections. And we are designing and will be adding new features - like a literary sampler - in the coming months.
More is better illustrated by the site itself. The materials are intended for use by both scholars and students. Please let me have, as well, your reaction to the site. We are at the beginning of sharing our work with a global public, and are anxious to hear from colleagues.

Two Millenia of German Jewish History
- Permanent Exhibition
The Jewish Museum will open with its first major exhibition on September 9th 2001. The opening will display a permanent exhibition offering visitors a journey through German-Jewish history and culture, from its earliest testimonies, through the Middle Ages and up to the present. Jewish contributions to German culture, politics, economics and science and other similar topics will be presented along with the everyday life of regular Jewish citizens, the history of persecution and the vacuum that was left behind, as well as the survival and new beginning of Jewish life in this country.
