Dr. Gaffney is on the faculty of the International Trauma Studies Program at New York University. Prior to her position at NYU she was a member of the graduate faculty and Director of The Center for Women and Children at Risk at Columbia University. She holds an undergraduate degree from Hunter College and Masters degrees from both Teachers College and Rutgers University. Dr. Gaffney earned her doctorate in child cognitive development at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1997 she was awarded the Prudential Fellowship for Children and The News at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. As a member of the Advisory Committee for the Children's Health-A-Thon for Channel Thirteen, she was part of the first public television broadcast on children's health issues. Dr. Gaffney has long addressed the issues of trauma in children's lives. After the Challenger explosion she worked with schools on how best to help grieving children. She has also worked with families following the Pan Am 103 crash in Scotland. Dr. Gaffney developed and appeared in public service announcements for children by WOR during the Gulf War. She is currently working with families affected by the World Trade Center Terrorist Attacks through the New Jersey Family Assistance Center. As a consultant to the NJ Department of Mental Health, the University of Medicine and Dentistry, and Atlantic Health Systems, Dr. Gaffney is also providing training for schools, communities and professionals in the aftermath of the events of September 11th. In September she collaborated with one of the first responders to the terrorist attack, Liberty Science Center in New Jersey, providing staff and administrative support and helping to create "The Science Center as Sanctuary." In addition to numerous academic publications, Dr. Gaffney is the author of "The Seasons of Grief, Helping Children Grow Through Loss". Dr. Gaffney consults with schools and communities on issues related to children, trauma and interpersonal violence.

Fachvortrag mit dem Arzt und Psychoanalytiker Hans Keilson zum Thema Kinder als Opfer des Krieges
Sequentielle Traumatisierung und Heilung bei Kindern - Erfahrungen und Analysen eines engagierten Forschers und Arztes und anschließende Diskussion mit Konferenzteilnehmern und Gaesten
Prof. Bessel A. van der Kolk M.D ist seit den siebziger Jahren als Arzt, Forscher und Lehrer im Bereich der posttraumatischen Belastung und der damit verbundenen Phaenomene aktiv. Seine Arbeit integriert entwicklungsbezogene, biologische, psychodynamische und interpersonelle Aspekte der Wirkung des Traumas sowie seiner Behandlung. Sein Buch "Psychologisches Trauma" war die erste integrative Arbeit zum Thema, die die weitreichenden Wirkungen des Traumas auf die betroffene Person und die gesamte Palette der therapeutischen Aspekte, die bei ihrer Entdeckung eine Rolle spielen, darstellt.
Dr. van der Kolk und seine Mitarbeiter haben zu Themen wie Auswirkungen des Traumas auf die Entwicklung, dissoziative Probleme, Borderline-Persoenlichkeit und Selbst-Verstuemmelung, die kognitive Entwicklung traumatisierter Kinder und Erwachsene sowie die Psychobiologie des Traumas umfangreich publiziert.
Dr. van der Kolk ist ehemaliger Praesident der International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), Professor der Psychiatrie an der Boston University Medical School sowie Klinischer Direktor des Trauma Zentrums des HRI Hospitals in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Dr. med. Hans Keilson, Psychoanalytiker, wird 1909 in Bad Freienwalde (Brandenburg) geboren. Nach seinem Medizinstudium verlaesst er als Jude 1936 Deutschland in Richtung Niederlande, wo er auch die deutsche Besatzungszeit im Versteck ueberlebt und als Arzt für den Widerstand taetig ist. Er laesst sich nach dem Krieg in den Niederlanden zum Psychiater und Psychoanalytiker ausbilden und promoviert im Alter von sechzig Jahren mit einer 1979 erschienenen Arbeit über die "Sequentielle Traumatisierung bei Kindern", die wesentliche neue Erkenntnisse für die psychoanalytische Traumaforschung bereithaelt. 1985 bis 1988 ist er Praesident des "PEN-Zentrums German speaking writers abroad". Viele kennen und schaetzen den Lyriker, den Schriftsteller o d e r den Psychoanalytiker Hans Keilson, wobei gerade die Gesamtschau auf sein Oeuvre zeigt, wie stark aehnliche Motive durch alle seine Schriften gehen - ob es um die Spuren des Exils, der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Antisemitismus oder mit den traumatischen Folgen der Verfolgung geht.

This regional meeting of the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS) aims to disseminate information about recent theoretical and clinical advances in the field of psychotraumatology. Particular emphasis will be given to their implications for clinical practice in psychiatry and clinical psychology as well as prevention and public policy. On completion of the two day conference delegates will have become familiar with some of the most recent and reliable scientific evidence and will be in a position to integrate relevant aspects into clinical activity and other work related duties.The conference and workshops are suitable for psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, forensic experts, social workers, occupational therapists and others with a commitment to promoting the interests and well being of adults and children exposed to trauma, whether on an individual or collective basis.

(cooperation in the series "Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite Weltkrieg")
- The Research Institute for Military History at Potsdam welcomes authors to contribute to its ninth volume of the series "Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite Weltkrieg". The volume will deal with the relationship between war and society in Germany from 1939 to 1945. The project will focus on larger social and cultural issues, possibly in a comparative perspective. We are especially looking for papers dealing with the "radicalization" of war and its consequences for society, the military and the victims of national socialism. The articles should be based on results of current research and should be about 80 printed pages in length. The manuscripts must be submitted no later than March 1, 2003. Royalties to the author will be provided. There will be a preliminary conference from February 15-17, 2002 at Potsdam. We will discuss the different contributions for the forthcoming publication.
The following topics shall be considered:

Somatic Approaches to Working with Survivors of Torture and Refugee Trauma

- This workshop will be an introductory overview to the application of somatic psychology and somatic traumatology to working with refugees and survivors of torture. It will emphasize how trauma is stored in the body and somatic approaches for working with survivors of severe trauma, especially in the context of renewed traumatization faced by refugees who had previously fled to the US, in the wake of 09/11/01. After a brief theoretical overview of refugee and torture-related trauma, participants will learn basic somatic skills; tracking both their own somatic responses to trauma, as well as client responses to trauma. Experiential activities will focus on recognizing and managing trauma related activation and resourcing skills for clinicians who work with refugees and survivors of torture-related trauma.
Amber Elizabeth Lynn Gray, MPH, MA, DTR, LPC, is the Clinical Director of The Rocky Mountain Survivors Center, a non-profit organization providing mental health and support services to survivors of torture and war trauma. She is faculty at the Colorado Center for Social Trauma and a member of the National Consortium on Children and War. She is a graduate of Naropa University in Somatic Psychology: Dance /Movement Therapy program, and has a masters in Public Health from Columbia University. She has presented nationally and internationally on her work with traumatized refugee children, as well as the application of somatic psychology and dance/movement therapy to torture and war trauma recovery. One of the primary focuses of her work is kinesthetic, non-verbal approaches to working with severe trauma. She has recently taken her work to Haiti, Kosovo, India, and New Zealand.

The Impact of War - Political, Psychological and Social Consequences. A Public Seminar

- The recent terror attacks in the United States and the retaliatory bombings in Afghanistan have implications for South Africa in terms of foreign policy, as well as on economic, security, social and psychological levels. Closer to home, the wars which continue in Angola and the Great Lakes region also impact on South Africa.
This CSVR seminar aims to examine the implications of these wars from various perspectives and will feed into debates about how South Africans can and should respond to them.

Falling down and getting back: how women and men give meaning to abusive experiences in childhood

- Presenter: Dr. Sietske Dijkstra is an independent researcher from the Netherlands whose work addresses violence and aggression, particularly violence in intimate and interpersonal relationships. She has critically examined the so-called "intergenerational" cycle of abuse, and has conducted research projects focused on sexual abuse of males, reporting of child abuse, and sexual harassment in the work place. In her most recent work Sietske Dijkstra explores the meanings men and women construct of their experience of abuse in childhood, using a biographical approach. The theoretical lenses guiding her work include trauma theory and feminist analyses of power, violence and research. Dr. Dijkstra is trained as a psychologist and holds a PhD in the social sciences. She has taught courses at the University of Utrecht related to developmental psychology, women's studies, communication and welfare studies.

So oft die Loesung des Arbeitslosigkeitsproblems angekuendigt wurde - in Sicht ist sie nicht. Nach wie vor ist vielmehr die Unmoeglichkeit einer Arbeitstaetigkeit bei zugleich bestehender ausgepraegter Arbeits-Norm eines der haeufigsten man-made-disaster. Warum ist dieser Zustand traumatogen und muss es sein?
Um diese Frage auf der Ebene von Alltags- und Interaktionserfahrungen untersuchen zu koennen, wurde ein Erlebnisraum in den Blick genommen, der alle Arbeitslose teilen: das Arbeitsamt. Anhand von Tiefeninterviews und Frageboegen wurde ein Bild rekonstruiert, das sowohl Belastungen nachvollziehbar macht als auch erste Hinweise gibt fuer Wege zu ihrer Reduzierung.

Extremtraumatisierte Patienten entziehen sich nicht selten allen psychotherapeutischen Bemuehungen. Getragen wird diese Haltung von der Angst vor Retraumatisierungen sowie von Vorstellungen, nach denen ihre Erlebnisse nicht integrierbar sind in die mitmenschliche Gefuehlswelt. Erst in den letzten Jahren wurden Behandlungsmethoden entwickelt, mit den traumatisierte Patienten angstfreier ihre verschlossenen Innenwelten zu oeffnen wagten. So wurden seit Mitte der 80er Jahre intuitive Gespraechsformen erprobt, vor allem mit Folteropfern aus Chile, aus der Tuerkei und aus Balkanstaaten. Hier laesst sich studieren, wie gewalttraumatisierte Patienten ihre verinnerlichten Leidenskomplexe mit Hilfe von uebertragungsfreien Imaginationen aufzuloesen vermoegen. Intuitive Gespraeche ermoeglichen durch das Einbeziehen von transkulturellen, historischen, politischen und humanitaeren Fragen, sowie durch die Mobilisierung von Trauma-defokussierenden Geschichten und bildsprachlichen Einfaellen, Retraumatisierungen zu vermeiden und positive Ich-Bereiche zu reaktivieren.

- Immer wieder sind Einsatzkraefte in einer Notfallsituation mit Kindern und Jugendlichen konfrontiert, die seelisch schwer verletzt wurden - als Opfer eines Unfalls oder eines Gewaltverbrechens, als Augenzeuge oder nach dem Tod von Eltern, Geschwistern oder Freunden. Der Umgang mit diesen Kindern und Jugendlichen faellt oft nicht leicht.
Deshalb laden das DRK-Kriseninterventionsteam und die Abteilung fuer Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie des Kindes- und Jugendalters am UKE gemeinsam ein zu der Fortbildung mit Prof. Dr. med. Peter Riedesser, Direktor der Abteilung fuer Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie des Kindes- und Jugendalters, Prof. Dr. med. Internationale Sommerschule zum Thema Menschen- und Minderheitenrechte

Humanity in Action, eine europaeisch-amerikanische Organisation, bietet Studenten die Teilnahme an ihren Sommerschulen im Jahr 2002 an. Der Bewerbungsaufruf richtet sich an Studierende deutscher [daenischer, niederlaendischer und US-amerikanischer] Universitaeten, die sich im Bereich der Menschen- und Minderheitenrechte engagieren.
Humanity in Action (HiA) verfolgt das Ziel, ein humanes Miteinander durch persoenliches und gesellschaftliches Engagement zu gewaehrleisten. Dabei gilt das Augenmerk insbesondere dem Umgang mit Minderheiten. Humanity in Action - Deutschland e.V. wurde nach dem Vorbild der US-amerikanischen, daenischen und niederlaendischen Organisationen im Sommer 2001 gegruendet. Im Juni 2002 wird die Sommerschule erstmals in Deutschland (Berlin) durchgefuehrt.
Die Sommerschulen fuehren insgesamt 60 junge Erwachsene aus Daenemark, Deutschland, den Niederlanden und den USA zusammen. Je 20 Teilnehmer kooperieren dabei in transatlantischen Teams in Amsterdam, Berlin und Kopenhagen. HiA-D ermoeglicht erstmals je 10 hochmotivierten Studenten aus Deutschland, sich in einem vierwoechigen Programm in Berlin im Juni 2002 ausfuehrlich mit der Thematik der Menschen- und Minderheitenrechte auseinander zu setzen. Den Teilnehmern werden hochrangige Seminare und Vortraege geboten, in denen die Situation von Minderheiten aus historischer und aktueller Perspektive beleuchtet wird. Ausserdem wird ein Einblick in relevante Institutionen gewaehrt. Zu Beginn und zum Ende des deutschen Programms finden Treffen mit den daenisch-amerikanischen und niederlaendisch-amerikanischen Projektgruppen in Kopenhagen bzw. Berlin statt. Es schliesst sich im Oktober 2002 ein einwoechiger Besuch aller Teilnehmer in Washington D.C. und New York an. Alle Kosten werden von! HiA-D und HiA-USA getragen. Bewerbungsschluss fuer die Teilnahme (Bewerber von deutschen Universitaeten) ist der 1. Dezember 2001.

- Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft "Dienst fuer den Frieden (ADDF)", ein Zusammenschluss von ueber 30 Friedensorganisationen, hat juengst die Broschuere "Zivile, gewaltfreie Konfliktbearbeitung" herausgegeben. Die 35seitige Broschuere ermoeglicht eine Uebersicht ueber Anbieter und ihre Angebote im Bereich der Aus- und Fortbildung im deutschsprachigen Raum.

Terrorism: September 11, 2001 - Trauma Grief and Recovery
- On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two planes were used as missiles to destroy two towers in the World Trade Center. One plane crashed into the Pentagon. One, crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. This horrible tragedy resulted in the loss of thousands of lives, treasured structures, cherished beliefs and a valued sense of ongoing safety. As a nation, we shared shock/disbelief, horror, fear, sadness, grief, despair, anger, rage, worry, stress, and/or the need to take action. In addition, we have each been affected in an individual way by this tragedy. Heroes have and will emerge. We can all become heroes by courteously and sensitively helping ourselves to recover, helping each other to recover, enhancing the safety of all, and, when possible, finding ways to act that make life better now and over time. ...

The sight of that airplane deliberately striking the World Trade Center is something that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. Everyone who saw the World Trade Towers collapse has become part of the world community of trauma survivors. People who are already trauma survivors have been re-traumatized. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms often resurface-even for people who have had successful therapy-with further trauma or incidents that remind you of some aspect of the trauma, like total complete powerlessness while you watch other people die. ...

The first bibliography includes major journal articles, book chapters, books, and Internet resources on these issues organized by topic. The second bibliography is comprised of reference materials for background information and further study. In addition, there is an annotated list of relevant journals.
Instructional Resources (2000)
This 32-page document consists of resource materials for developing whole courses and lectures on genocide, ethnopolitical conflict, and human rights issues. For incorporating specific topics into existing courses, lecture suggestions and selected references are given. For developing and revising whole courses, sample syllabi are provided. In addition, lists of relevant videotapes, Web sites, Internet discussion lists, and professional organizations are included.
