Communities in Crisis: Strengthening Resources for Community Reconstruction.
6th International Conference for Health and Human Rights
20.-24.06.2001, Hotel Croatia, Cavtat, Croatia
International Society for Health and Human Rights (ISHHR)
- The conference will bring together practitioners and academics to look into ways of offering support and aid to communities affected by violence and conflict, from crisis to disasters, and to examine old and new ways of reconstructing societal ways of living. The subject matter of the conference will be the short- and long-term consequences of conflict and will aim to develop ways of addressing destabilized communities from a human rights and health perspective. Special focus will be given to victims of torture and trauma, especially vulnerable populations, including children, adolescents and the elderly. The international political situation regarding refugees, internally displaced persons and asylum seekers will be emphasized, with special focus on their health situation. Gender issues will be raised in relation to the subjects discussed.
The International Society for Health and Human Rights (ISHHR) was formally established in October 1993 to bring together health workers concerned with the impact on health of persecution, torture and other human rights violations. It arose out of an informal but highly committed network of dedicated health professionals who had been meeting and sharing their knowledge and experiences over a period of some ten years.
