Psychological Consequences of Organized Violence and Terror: Psychotrauma from latest scientific knowledge to practical field work [in English]

- In recent years, the world has witnessed an escalation of violence and atrocities in an increasing number of armed conflicts. Modern warfare aims at threatening and fighting civilians rather than foreign armies. Mass expulsions, massacres, mutilations and even genocide have become commonplace. Over 100 states worldwide continue to utilize torture against political or cultural minorities in order to maintain power. These forms of severe human rights violations have devastating effects on individuals and communities alike.
Many victims of war suffer from injuries and medical diseases, primarily due to poor hygienic conditions, absence of medical care, poverty and malnutrition. The wounds of the psyche however are also extremely disabling. Having endured or witnessed atrocious combat situations, torture, rape, or the abduction or killing of a loved ones, can cause severe suffering, including nightmares, flashbacks, constant fear and grief. In many cases these symptoms do not dissipate over time. About 20-50 percent of civilians who have experienced war and persecution find themselves victims of severe psychological distress as a consequence of their traumatic experiences. Armed conflicts and violent repression are certainly detrimental for community life. The social structure of war-torn societies is destroyed when relatives and friends are dead or missing. In addition, people often feel detached from one another, withdraw from social activities, and are unable to re-establish family and community life. The psychological and social wounds of wars, persecution and immense loss can persist for decades and interfere with the reconstruction of functioning societies.
"vivo" works to overcome and prevent traumatic stress and its consequences within the individual as well as the community, safeguarding the rights and dignity of people affected by violence and conflict. "vivo" further aims to strengthen local resources for the development of peaceful, human rights-based, societal ways of living.
The NGO is an alliance of professionals experienced in the fields of psychotraumatology, international health, humanitarian aid, scientific laboratory and field research, sustainable development and human rights advocacy. "vivo" is an independent non-profit organization committed to the provision of services to those who need it most - regardless of their racial, ethnic, sexual, religious or political affiliations.
Course Objective and Curriculum
Curent Needs of Professionals and Organizations
Many development, medical and mental health organizations and professionals have realized the urgent need for a profound understanding of the forms and consequences of psychological trauma:
The global intensification of violence aimed at civilians in conflict situations results in a colossal challenge for aid organizations. Aid organizations realize that survivors need more than medical emergency intervention and food provisioning. Many victims need psychological support and treatment in dealing with their traumatic experiences in order to regain the capability to care for themselves and their dependents. Psychological, social and human rights-based interventions are required to facilitate the development of new and peaceful societal ways of living.
Many expatriates who work for aid organizations witness violent acts or realize that they are at potential risk for becoming a victim of organized violence. Practically all field workers in crisis regions hear from victims about atrocities and see the psychologically devastating consequences in survivors. While not all the consequences are readily identified by the untrained eye, and while a naive observer may not necessarily understand the connections between violence and severe psychological problems, such observations consistently affect the witness and can even lead to vicarious traumatization in the aid personnel. Training and adequate safety measures are mandatory to protect the psychological well-being and health of the field workers and to ensure a high standard of professionalism.
Professionals in the exile countries are required to assess the impact of persecution, traumatic stress and migration, and to treat refugees and survivors who seek their help. Often they are requested to investigate the clinical pathology of asylum seekers. A sound understanding of the psychiatric morbidity and the neuro-physiological changes as well as the human rights aspects, helps to ensure a high standard of expertise doing justice to the survivors and their specific needs and rights, making reliable diagnostic decisions and carry out effective therapeutic interventions.
Unique Training Course
"vivo’s" training course answers directly to the needs outlined above. The uniqueness of this training lies in the fact that we will, according to "vivo’s" mandate, build a bridge between latest research findings in brain science and its translation into therapeutic, human rights-based and culturally appropriate interventions in the field and exile. Upon completion of this course the participants will have enhanced their awareness to recognize PTSD and trauma related disorder, they will have gained knowledge on how to respond appropriately to different stages of traumatization and posttraumatic growth. They will have a heightened self-awareness on the impact of working with traumatized survivors, self-processing mechanisms and self-protection measures. The holistic program of the training targets the development of participant’s skills to deal with feelings of anxiety and helplessness, as well as promote personal coping skills.
Part I: Organized Violence, Trauma Theory, Diagnosis, and Epidemiology
The first part of the course introduces us to the special problems and needs of survivors of organized violence. Demographic, economical and health characteristics of the populations concerned are highlighted. Followed by an introduction of the scientific basis of psychotraumatology, the symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and the related Disorders of Extreme Stress (DES). This includes: psychophysiology of stress and trauma (cognitive and somatic effects), knowledge on the condition of traumatized survivors during acute and chronic states, assessment and diagnosis of PTSD and DES, relationship between testifying and memory change in traumatized individuals (memory theory), review of epidemiological data available for war zones, crisis regions and refugee camps, design of appropriate mental health interventions and self protection measures. Participants will further be introduced to the various human rights instruments that deal with war, torture, organized violence and crimes against humanity as well as to the issue of integrating human rights advocacy, human security and justice seeking with the development of appropriate mental health methodologies at the level of the individual as well as the community.
Part II: Treatment and Supervision
A special focus during the second part of the training will be on the treatment of survivors of organized violence. Aid workers who have or will assist traumatized people and communities in the field will gain specific technical skills for their work. We will look at measures of ‘first aid’ for acutely traumatized survivors, but also at the impact of trauma on the life of communities and future generations. Participants will be encouraged to identify the symptoms of PTSD and DES in affected individuals. Methods of acute interventions will be reviewed practically and currently available procedures for treatment and prevention of psychotrauma will be discussed and analyzed in view of their efficacy and appropriateness in field situations. Long-term versus short-term treatment approaches will be compared. Participants will learn that a number of different approaches aim at supporting people and communities that suffer from traumatic stress, but that not all of them are effective; some of them can even be harmful.
A first stage training in Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), which was pioneered by "vivo", will be offered exclusively. Narrative Exposure is a joint approach of psychological treatment and explicit testifying of human rights violations. It focuses on the individual and the community alike. This Therapy (NET) can be understood as a psychological method to allow reorganization of emotional networks (in anxiety disorders especially) in PTSD. The intervention prevents cognitive avoidance and induces emotional reprocessing of negative, stressful and traumatic life-events through imaginative exposure. Participants will carry out therapeutic training sessions under supervision and guidance of the vivo staff.
Finally, we will concentrate on the issue of how to support aid workers to seek help for themselves or deal with vicarious traumatization. The workshop will also look into support mechanisms such as organizational supervision and peer group support for returning staff.
Training Methodology
The course will be facilitated by the "vivo" training team. Faculty includes renowned scientists and clinical practitioners in the field of public health, psychotraumatology, brain research and humanitarian aid, all with experience in the field; complemented by human rights and philosophical expertise.
Both, part I and II of the training will involve a combination of lectures, exercises and demonstrations, focused on the theoretical and practical skill training of the (future) trauma practitioner. Case studies will foster collective learning from real life situations. Participants are encouraged to share their experience (problems and possible solutions) that emerges from daily work. We will follow a participatory, process-oriented approach, based on the principles of adult learning. As a result, self-exploration will be enhanced, also in terms of ‘self growth and self understanding’, which we consider fundamental for the successful work of a trauma practitioner.
Reading materials with the most recent and relevant trauma literature will be prepared as handouts and available before as well as during the workshop.
Participants' Profile
Participants will be (emergency) mental and public health professionals (psychologists, social workers, nurses, psychotherapists, medical doctors, paramedics, epidemiologists, etc.), aid workers, human rights practitioners (i.e. interviewers for human rights organizations or tribunals) and other professionals, who have either worked in crises regions or are expected to do so.
The workshop will continuously create space for discussion and sharing of participants’ own experiences and knowledge. A competent command of English is obviously indispensable.
Dates and Venue
The course will start on the afternoon of Sunday September 1, with the registration of the participants and an introductory dinner. The first training session will take place on Sunday evening. Closing session will be on Sunday lunchtime September 8, 2001, after which all participants are expected to leave. Certificates will be handed out and guests will be invited for a dinner party on Saturday evening.
The course is residential. We will be housed in a friendly and comfortable country hotel in Cupramontana, which is famous for its excellent Italian cooking. Parts of the training will take place at "vivo’s" headquarter the "Eremo" herself, an ancient former monastery, inhabited since the year 1100, situated in the picturesque Marche region of Italy’s South. The hermitage is not only a place for study, conferences and training, but also an ideal environment for healing and therapeutic activity.
A sight seeing trip to some of the outstanding historical monuments (i.e. Assisi, Rome or Urbino) will be organized for the whole group by "vivo".
Tuition Fee, Accomodation, Insurance
The full prize of the course is EUR 1.900, -. It includes all training material (reading materials, hand-outs and working materials), full board and lodging, transportation to and from the airport Ancona Falconara and an excursion.
Please make sure to register early, as the number of participants is strictly limited. Closing date for applications is July 15, 2002. "vivo" will confirm the receipt of application and notify applicants about their admission to the course. Please wait for confirmation before making your travel arrangements.
Upon application please make a deposit of EUR 100,- in order to reserve your place. Full payment of course fee is due latest by the 15th of July 2002. Those pre-paying the entire tuition prior to April 1, 2002 will receive a EUR 200, - discount.
Participants are asked to take care of their own sponsorship and insurance. "vivo" is unfortunately not in a position to grant funds.

- Trotz der Konjunktur von neueren Arbeiten zum Thema von Geschichte einerseits und Subjekt und Subjektivitaet andererseits, gibt es von Arbeiten zu einzelnen Philosophen abgesehen keine uebergreifenden Studien, die die beiden Begriffe miteinander verbinden, um die Moeglichkeiten verschiedener Subjektkonzeptionen und Geschichtsbegriffe auszuloten. Die Tagung soll entsprechend den dezidierten Versuch unternehmen, das Verhaeltnis des Subjekts zur, in der und als Geschichte systematisch zu untersuchen und einzelne philosophische, literatur-, geschichts- und kulturtheoretische Ansaetze darauf abgleichen, wie Geschichte unter den jeweiligen Praemissen gegenwaertiger Theorie gedacht und dargestellt werden kann, sowie welches Subjekt oder welche Subjekte in diesen Prozessen auszumachen sind.
Die Tagung konzentriert sich hierbei auf die Themenfelder Geschichtsphilosophie, Geschichts- und Literaturtheorie sowie Geschichtsschreibung und Gegenwartsliteratur.
Schwerpunkte der Tagung sollen u.a. die Themenfelder sein:
- Subjekt und Geschichte im nachmetaphysischen Zeitalter
- Literaturtheorie und Literaturgeschichtsschreibung
- Diskurs und Kritik
- Koerper und Trauma: veraeusserlichte Subjektivitaet - verinnerlichte Geschichte
- Inszenierungen von Subjektivitaet in Literatur, Kunst, Autobiographie
Alle Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer werden darum gebeten, ihre Beitraege auf die systematische Frage nach dem Verhaeltnis von Subjekt und Geschichte zu konzentrieren.
Adressatenkreis:
Interessenten aus den Literatur- (alle Philologien), Medien-, Kultur- und Geschichtswissenschaften, der Philosophie, Anthropologie und ggf. weiteren humanwissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, die sich mit dem Verhaeltnis von Geschichte und Subjekt auseinandersetzen.

- Events of extreme trauma and upheaval mark the cultural fabric of identity in twentieth-century Germany. Individuals experiencing the horrors of World War I, Nazi Germany, and World War II, or the trials of Germany's division and unification often retraced the paths of their life stories in memoirs and autobiographies. This Special Topic Session provides a forum for the presentation of textual analyses in which scholars explore the vagaries and contours of the written "Self" produced by the retelling of life stories and ultimately reveals the vital role memoirs and autobiographies play in documenting the evolution of German identity in the twentieth century. AG Fruehe Neuzeit [in German]

- Die 5. Arbeitstagung der AG Fruehe Neuzeit im Verband der Historikerinnen und Historiker Deutschlands wird vom 18.- 20. September 2002 an der Freien Universitaet Berlin stattfinden. Das Rahmenthema "Gewalt" soll unter unterschiedlichen Aspekten und mit verschiedenen Zugaengen diskutiert werden, wobei nach unserer Vorstellung die Grenze zwischen legitimer und nicht mehr legitimierbarer Gewalt einen zentralen Bezugspunkt bilden koennte.
Bezueglich der Rahmenbedingungen orientieren wir uns an den bisherigen Veranstaltungen. Das bedeutet, dass sechs Sektionen mit jeweils drei bis vier Vortraegen geplant werden. Obwohl schon zahlreiche Vorschlaege eingegangen sind, moechten wir allen Interessierten die Moeglichkeit geben, bis Maerz 2002 Sektionen oder Einzelvortraege vorzuschlagen. Das Programm soll im Fruehsommer 2002 im Vorstand der Arbeitsgemeinschaft diskutiert
und beschlossen werden.
Wir freuen uns auf eine spannende Tagung und hoffen, dass das Thema und der Tagungsort auf breites Interesse stossen.

An wen soll ich schreiben? An Gott? Ein Theaterstueck [in German]

- Am 13. Januar 2002 wird "An wen soll ich schreiben? An Gott?" von Karl Fallend im Landestheater Linz Premiere haben. Das Auftragswerk des Landestheaters fusst auf einem Buch, das gerade im Boehlau-Verlag, Wien, unter dem Titel NS- Zwangsarbeit: Der Standort Linz der "Reichswerke Hermann Goering AG Berlin" 1938-1945 (Band 2: ZwangsarbeiterInnen: (Auto-)Biographische Einsichten) unter der Herausgabe von Oliver Rathkolb erschienen ist.
Zehntausende ZwangsarbeiterInnen, tausende mit "P" bzw. "Ost" gekennzeichnet, tausende KZ-Haeftlinge zur Nummer entwuerdigt, waren massenhaft eingesetzte Arbeitskraefte zum Aufbau der nationalsozialistischen Kriegsindustrie in Linz. Maenner und Frauen, Jugendliche und Kinder aus mehr als zwanzig Nationen mit je eigenen biographischen Geschichten und gebrochenen Lebensentwuerfen. Nach Kriegsende, in der wiedergewonnenen Freiheit, war fuer die meisten das Leiden nicht zu Ende. Bis heute.
Karl Fallend suchte das Gespraech mit ZeitzeugInnen, um einzelne Lebensgeschichten, Erlebnisse von einheimischen Betroffenenen und vor allem von Zwangsarbeiterinnen und Zwangsarbeitern sowie KZ-Ueberlebenden der Linzer Hermann-Goering-Werke in Erfahrung zu bringen. Es handelt sich nicht um beliebige Ereignisse eines Lebenslaufes, sondern um tabuisierte, zum Teil extrem traumatisierte Erlebnisse, die ueber fuenfzig Jahre wortlos vergraben wurden und fuer viele zum ersten Mal Sprache und Gehoer fanden.

Im Rahmen des Seminars werden therapeutische Erfahrungen aus der Arbeit mit Opfer- und Taeterfamilien vermittelt. Dabei ist das Seminar fuer Therapeutinnen und Therapeuten gedacht, die selber aus Opfer-, Taeter- oder Mitlaeufer- Familien stammen. Juedische und nichtjuedische Therapeutinnen und Therapeuten sind eingeladen, ihre eigenen Erfahrungen zu bearbeiten und durch einen gegenseitigen Prozeß ueber das Thema (aus biographischer und therapeutischer Sicht) mehr zu erfahren. Der Rahmen der KZ-Gedenkstaette Bergen-Belsen wird uns bei unserer intensiven Arbeit unterstuetzen. Wir wollen dabei Methoden der systemischen Einzel- und Gruppentherapie ausprobieren, die wir auch im therapeutischen Kontext unserer Arbeit mit KlientInnen anwenden koennen.
In den psychotherapeutischen Begegnungen mit unseren Klientinnen und Klienten koennen wir viele Aspekte unserer gemeinsamen Geschichte wieder entdecken. Alle Familien haben in diesem Jahrhundert zwei Weltkriege und den Nationalsozialismus, viele Familien Vertreibung oder Flucht erlebt. Zudem haben alle Familien in Deutschland den Massenmord an den Juden mit offenen oder mit geschlossenen Augen erlebt. Dies gilt z.B. auch fuer die Euthanasie, als behinderte Kinder aus der Familie fuer immer 'verschwanden'.
In nicht wenigen Familien haben Familienmitglieder sich aktiv am Holocaust beteiligt. Wie gehen wir mit diesen, unseren Familienerfahrungen um? Viele Fragen stellen sich dabei fuer das eigene Leben, aber auch fuer unsere Arbeit mit Klientinnen und Klienten: Wie erleben wir uns in der Beziehung zu den Familienmitgliedern, von denen wir glauben oder wissen, daß sie persoenlich schuldig geworden sind? Vor allem, wenn es die eigenen Eltern oder Großeltern sind, kann uns diese Frage auch noch lange nach deren Tod bewegen. Wie soll ich mit Schuldfragen umgehen? Wird die Schuld geerbt? Wie gehe ich mit den Taetergeschichten in anderen Familien um?
In Deutschland, Oesterreich und der Schweiz leben und arbeiten heute auch juedische Kolleginnen und Kollegen, deren Familienmitglieder Opfer von Vertreibung und Massenmord geworden sind. Auch als Kind einer Opferfamilie, in der z.B. ein Elternteil den Holocaust ueberlebt hat, ist ein Leben und Arbeiten im heutigen Deutschland oder Oesterreich nicht ohne innere Widersprueche moeglich. Viele fragen sich nach ihrem Platz in der juedischen Kultur/Religion, erleben es als schwierig, wenn die deutsche Vergangenheit im beruflichen Kontext unberuecksichtigt bleibt oder gar verleugnet wird.
In diesem Seminar wollen wir uns gemeinsam damit beschaeftigen, wie wir unsere eigenen Familiengeschichten verstehen und nutzen koennen, um mit unseren Klientinnen und Klienten unterstuetzend zu arbeiten. Bereits in letzten Jahren konnten wir erfahren, wie therapeutisch bedeutsam ein gemeinsames Seminar von Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern aus Opfer- und Taeterfamilien sein kann. (vgl. Opfer und Taeter zugleich? Moraldilemmata juedischer Funktionshaeftlinge in der Shoah

Sollte man sich den Befehlen der Nazis unterwerfen, um die eigene Familie oder sich selbst zu retten? Mit diesen Fragen waren juedische Kapos sowie Judenratsmitglieder waehrend der Nazizeit konfrontiert. Durch ihre Beteiligung an der Vernichtung ihrer Mitgefangenen wurden diese beiden Gruppen der Funktionshaeftlinge zu einer Zwischenschicht zwischen Tätern und Opfern. So mussten die Judenraete z. B. die Deportationslisten für die Nazis erstellen und die Kapos waren der SS direkt unterstellt. Für viele Ueberlebende verkoerpern sie die Verwirklichung des absoluten Boesen: "Sie waren schlimmer als die Deutschen", bemerkt ein Teil von ihnen.
Was ist Mythos und was Wirklichkeit am Bild der Kapos? Die israelische Psychologin Revital Ludewig-Kedmi analysiert die Biografien von vier Familien. Sie schildert die damaligen Konflikte und heutigen Bewaeltigungsversuche der Funktionshaeftlinge und zeigt, inwieweit die Kapos und Judenraete nicht nur privilegierte Haeftlinge waren, sondern auch doppelt missbrauchte Opfer. Die Judenratsmitglieder schrieben die Deportationslisten nicht aus boeser Absicht, sondern um sich und die eigene Familie — wenn auch nur vorlaeufig — vor den Deportationen schuetzen zu koennen. Solche im Zwangskontext des NS-Systems entstandenen moralischen Dilemmata koennen nicht logisch rational geloest, sondern nur emotional verarbeitet werden. In den Bemuehungen der Funktionshaeftlinge, sich wieder als moralisch zu erleben, kommt es zu psychischen Reaktionen, die vom Selbstmordversuch bis zur totalen Verdraengung reichen. Dabei sieht sich ein Teil der ehemaligen Funktionshaeftlinge als passive Opfer, waehrend sich andere als aktive Helden rekonstruieren.
Dies ist ein interdisziplinaeres Buch, das eine tief gehende psychologische, historische und philosophische Analyse dieses bisher weitgehend unerforschten Themas bietet. Es zeigt, dass juedische Funktionshaeftlinge waehrend der Ghetto- und Lagerhaft auch in den schwierigsten Situationen danach strebten, ihren moralischen Werten treu zu bleiben. Doch dies war nicht moeglich, und die tiefen Risse im moralischen Selbstbild fuehrten zum Teil bis zum psychischen Zusammenbruch. Diese psychologische Analyse hat wichtige Implikationen fuer die Therapie mit Patienten, die unter traumatischen Moraldilemmata leiden.

The Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston invites applications for its 2002-2003 Visiting Scholars Program.

- The Institute seeks visiting scholars to carry out projects in humanities disciplines that will deepen understanding of and develop pedagogical approaches to the program's annually selected theme. We have titled this year's theme Humanities Perspectives on Health Policy. We welcome innovative research that links the humanities with health policies. Areas of research include, but are not limited to, the following: historical, ethical, economic, narrative or legal aspects of health policies, research ethics, access to or allocation of health care services, public health ethics, and topics such as patients' rights, privacy and confidentiality, organ transplantation, or other specific areas of health policy. Visiting Scholars will be selected on the basis of the significance of the proposed project and their relevance to the program's announced theme, the strength of their proposals outlining a plan of work for the period of residency, and the likelihood that projects will enhance the Institute's teaching and research programs and contribute to the visiting scholar's future teaching and writing. We are seeking scholars from the full range of humanities disciplines at all levels of professional experience. Graduate students are not eligible.
Visitors are expected to carry out their proposed project (research, curriculum development) at the Institute and to participate in its multidisciplinary work (colloquia, symposia). Periods of residency may range from two months to nine months, and stipends amount to $4,000 per month. Some limited medical benefits are included but travel subsidies are not available.

- Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, zum zweiten Mal schreibt die ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius ihr Stipendienprogramm "Deutschland und seine oestlichen Nachbarn - Beitraege zur europaeischen Geschichte" zur Foerderung der osteuropaeischen Geschichte aus. Die ZEIT-Stiftung moechte damit dem besonders qualifizierten Nachwuchs der Geschichtswissenschaften und gegebenenfalls benachbarter Disziplinen die Moeglichkeit bieten, sich im Rahmen von Dissertationen mit Aspekten der Geschichte Mittel- und Osteuropas vom Mittelalter bis zur Zeitgeschichte auseinander zu setzen.

Le Centre Primo Levi, Paris [in French]
- L'Association Primo Levi gère un centre pluridisciplinaire de soins aux victimes de la torture et de la violence politique.
En 1998, plus de 250 victimes ont été accueillies, femmes, enfants et hommes de quelques 30 pays. La Turquie, l'Algérie, les pays d'Afrique centrale sont les plus représentés. Cette association a été crée par 5 ONG françaises (Amnesty International-France, Médecins du Monde, Action des Chrétiens pour l'Abolition de la Torture, Juristes Sans Frontières et TREVE). Elle entend venir en aide à toutes personnes victimes de tortures ou de répression politique dans leur pays d'origine et réfugiés en France.
L'équipe permanente est aujourd'hui composée de 13 personnes dont des médecins généralistes, des psychothérapeutes, des psychiatres, une psychosociologue-intèrprète du turc, responsable du centre, une kinésithérapeute, une dentiste, une assistante sociale, des juristes, deux responsables de l'accueil et un service d'interprétariat professionnel pour environ un tiers des patients suivis . Un administrateur et une pharmacienne bénévoles offrent également leurs services.
Les activités du centre consistent en
- une prise en charge médicale visant à soigner les séquelles physiques des mauvais
traitements
- mais également une mise en confiance progressive des patients
- une prise en charge psychologique traitant les traumatismes issus de la torture et de l'exil
- des soins kinésithérapeutiques et dentaires complémentaires
- un suivi social visant l'intégration dans la société d'accueil et l'accès aux droits sociales
- un suivi juridique qui accompagne les demandeurs d'asile dans leurs démarches
La prise en charge des patients nécessite en outre la présence d'interprètes qui jouent souvent le rôle de médiateurs culturels. Un service de documentation permet au personnel de s'informer sur l'actualité des pays d'origine des patients. Plusieurs missions de transfert de compétences avec le centre de réhabilitation des vétérans de la guerre d'Afghanistan à Perm, en Russie ont eu lieu les dernières premières années de l'association. Depuis une session de formation et en partenariat avec Médecins Du Monde, l'association propose des sessions de formation à Paris pour des soignants algériens prenant en charge les victimes des violences politiques en Algérie. Différents contacts ont également été pris dans différents pays tels que l'Inde ou l'Algérie, en vue de partenariats à venir. L'association Primo Levi a procédé a différentes opérations de sensibilisation, de formation auprès de professionnels susceptibles d'entrer en contact avec des réfugiés dont les séquelles post-traumatiques méritent une attention particulière.
Le centre Primo Levi publie une lettre d'information trimestrielle, "Mémoires", dont l'objectif est de rendre compte aux donateurs et d'informer sur les activités de l'association mais également de la faire connaître.

Arbeitskreis Geschichte + Theorie (AG+T) [in German]
- Der "Arbeitskreis Geschichte + Theorie" (AG+T) ist ein unabhaengiger und selbst organisierter Zusammenschluss juengerer Nachwuchshistoriker und -historikerinnen, die alle an verschiedenen europaeischen Forschungseinrichtungen taetig sind. Im Winter 1995 hatte sich unter Goettinger und Berliner Studenten Unmut darueber geaeussert, dass im geschichtswissenschaftlichen Studium den theoretischen Grundlagen des Faches nur selten Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wuerde. Gemeinsam mit weiteren Interessierten aus Bielefeld, Bochum und Kiel wurde im darauffolgenden Jahr der "Arbeitskreis Geschichte + Theorie" mit dem Ziel gegruendet, ein interdisziplinaeres Diskussionsforum fuer die theoretische Grundlegung historischen Arbeitens zu bieten. An den Beduerfnissen von Nachwuchshistorikern orientiert, soll der Arbeitskreis zu einer theoriegeleiteten Reflexion ueber die jeweiligen Forschungsarbeiten seiner Mitglieder einladen. Die Einsicht in die grundsaetzliche "Theoriebeduerftigkeit der Geschichtswissenschaft" (Reinhart Koselleck) bildet - gepaart mit einem weitreichenden Interesse an praktisch-empirischer Umsetzungsarbeit - noch immer das zentrale Anliegen des Kreises.
Neben der Diskussion laufender Forschungsprojekte und der unterschiedlichen Qualifikationsarbeiten seiner inzwischen mehr als zwanzig Mitglieder beteiligt sich der Arbeitskreis ebenfalls an der Debatte um die kulturgeschichtliche Erweiterung der Geschichtswissenschaft. Bisherige Schwerpunkte gemeinsamen Arbeitens umfassen insbesondere die Gebiete der Erfahrungsgeschichte, der Intellectual History sowie der Repraesentationsgeschichte. Seit seiner Gruendung hat der Kreis in halbjaehrlichem Abstand semioeffentliche Arbeitstagungen und Konferenzen zu den verschiedenen Schwerpunktthemen und anderen Gegenstaenden von gemeinsamen Interesse veranstaltet, welche von seinen Mitgliedern selbst organisiert und mit eigenen Beitraegen bestritten wurden. Im Rahmen dieser Tagungen konnten zudem namhafte Historiker zu intensiven Arbeitsgespraechen gewonnen werden, unter anderem Prof. Dr. Bernd Weisbrod (1997), Prof. Dr. Werner Boldt (1998) und Prof. Dr. Alf Luedtke (2000).
In den kommenden zwei Jahren konzentriert sich der "Arbeitskreis Geschichte + Theorie" zusaetzlich und ergaenzend zu seiner bisherigen Schwerpunktarbeit auf die Entwicklung eines eigenen Ansatzes innerhalb der Medien- und Kommunikationsgeschichte. In Form einer neu zu begruendenden Historischen Kommunikologie sollen dabei insbesondere Veraenderungen im Verhaeltnis von Kommunikation, Medien und Oeffentlichkeit im Uebergang von der Industrie- zur Informationsgesellschaft untersucht werden. Zu diesem Themenkomplex werden in jaehrlichem Abstand drei oeffentliche Tagungen veranstaltet: Nachdem sich eine erste Konferenz den "Wechselwirkungen von Medientheorien und kommunikativen Praktiken in der 'kommunikologischen Sattelzeit' (1880-1960)" widmete, wird gegenwaertig die Folgetagung zu "Interpersonaler Kommunikation im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert" fuer das Fruehjahr 2002 vorbereitet.

Unique website offers social science perspectives on 9/11
- Leading Social Scientist respond to Sept. 11 through a unique website. Valuable Resource for Social Science and Social Studies Teachers. The Social Science Research Council has launched a website featuring essays on numerous aspects of the September 11 disaster and its aftermath by some of the world’s leading social scientists. Called "After September 11: Perspectives from the Social Sciences", the website brings extensive theoretical perspectives and knowledge to bear on the questions raised by tragedy and aims to provide the public and academic community with a deeper level of analysis than can be found on Op-Ed pages or talk shows.
The website, which now features close to 40 essays, grows daily, with more than 50 social scientists having agreed to submit writings for the project. Contributors include Olivier Roy, France’s leading expert on political Islam, writing on neo-fundamentalism; Barry Eichengreen, a noted economic historian, assessing the impact of September 11 on global finance and financial institutions; and leading political scientist Seyla Benhabib, addressing how recent terror networks challenge the boundaries of democratic states.
"The immediacy of the current crisis presents an unusual challenge for social scientists, who are accustomed to looking at dramatic events with great hindsight," says SSRC president Craig Calhoun. "But we need to make space in the public consciousness for commentaries that take up questions in which people have competence, not just opinions."
The website is particularly helpful for teachers–college and university instructors as well as those at the secondary level–who want to address unfolding events in their courses from the perspectives of the social sciences. It is also a useful tool for journalists who seek a wider set of viewpoints and solid analytical thinking on the issues at hand. By mid-January, the website will feature a teaching guide to facilitate educators’ use of the essays in their lessons.
"Given the complexity of issues surrounding September 11, from civil rights, to refugees, to Islam, this project is extremely important," says Lisa Anderson, Dean of Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and a member of the Council's Board of Directors. "Policy makers and the public alike need the knowledge and diverse perspectives offered by these distinguished social scientists."
Some material from the website will form the basis of a book series that the SSRC will launch in the coming year with the New Press, offering social scientific analyses of developments surrounding September 11.

- Vor 30 Jahren, im Dezember 1971, wurde "Médecins Sans Frontières / Aerzte ohne Grenzen" gegruendet. Gestern wie heute hat humanitaere Hilfe das Ziel, Leben zu retten, Leiden zu verringern und den Menschen zu helfen, ihre Rechte und ihre Wuerde wiederzuerlangen. Wie in den letzten 30 Jahren werden wir uns weiterhin fuer das Recht der Zivilbevoelkerung auf unabhaengige humanitaere Hilfe einsetzen - in Afghanistan ebenso wie in all den vergessenen Konflikten, die niemals die Titelseiten erreichen.

Im Schatten des Terrors: das Leid der Afghanen. Selten war es fuer Hilfsorganisationen schwieriger, in Afghanistan zu arbeiten, und selten wurde ihre Unterstuetzung dringender benoetigt. 20 Jahre Buergerkrieg und eine der schwersten Duerrekatastrophen in der Geschichte des Landes haben die Bevoelkerung an die Grenze der Belastbarkeit gebracht. Doch nach den furchtbaren Terroranschlaegen vom 11. September und den darauf folgenden Bombenangriffen hat sich die Situation noch einmal drastisch verschaerft.
Angola: Ein Land im Ausnahmezustand - Fotoreportage von Atsushi Shibuya. Rund zwoelf Millionen Menschen - etwa ein Viertel der Gesamtbevoelkerung Angolas - sind waehrend der vergangenen Jahre des Krieges aus ihrer Heimatregion vertrieben worden. Viele von ihnen haben in groeßeren Staedten Zuflucht gesucht und leben nun in Vertriebenencamps. Das Land kommt nach wie vor nicht zur Ruhe.
Sambia: Hoffnung auf ein neues Leben. Mehr als 200.000 Menschen sind in den letzten Jahren aus ihrer Heimat, der Demokratischen Republik Kongo, geflohen. Erste Etappe in eine oft ungewisse Zukunft ist fuer viele das Fluechtlingslager von Kala, im Norden des benachbarten Sambia.
